Properties of phreatic line

 The following are the characteristics of a phreatic line:-

In this article, I discussed the properties of the pheratic line 

1. It is the topmost line that separates the saturated and unsaturated soil mass within the body of the dam.
2. It follows the path of the base parabola.
3. beneath the phreatic line the pressure is hydrostatic and above it pressure is atmospheric.
4. At All the phreatic line pressure is atmospheric which means the pressure head at a point on the phreatic line is zero. hence the total head at any point on the phreatic line is equal to the datum head.
5. It can be used to calculate the seepage discharge.
