Deflected shapes of footings

 
The the deflected shapes of different types of footing on different soils are as shown-

For flexible footings -

1. Setttlement varies but pressure remains constant.
2. For clay soil settlement is maximum at centre of footing and minimum at the edge of footing.
3. For footing on granular soil settlement is maximum at below the edges and minimum at below the centre of the footings.

 For rigid footing-

1. Settlement is constant and pressure varies
2. For clayey soil Pressure is maximum below the edges  and minimum at below the centre of footing.
3. For footing on the granular soil pressure is maximum at below the centre of the footing and minimum(i.e, 0 ) at the below the edges of the footing.
