how to distinguish between silt and clay at sites

 Following are the methods used to distinguish the silt and clay at site are as follows-

1) Dispersion test

2)Diatancy test

3) Dry strength test

4) Toughness test

Dispersion test:-

Take a spoon of oven dried soil sample and mix it in a distilled water, if soil settle with in 10 to 15 minutes then it is silt otherwisw it is a clay.

Diatancy test 

Take a small amount of moist  soil in between your plam if moisture appears on remouling than it is a silt other wise it is a clay

Dry strength test 

prepare a 3mm diameter spherical ball and form the given sample of a soil and subjected it to drying ,if upon pressing the ball between the fingers. it is crushed the the soil is silt or it is clay.

Toughness test

Prepare a 3mm diameter thread from the given sample of the soil .if cracks appears over the surface of the thread then it is a silt otherwise it is a clay.
