What the assumptions in the derivation of Terzaghi’s consolidation equation ?

Following are the assumptions in the derivation of Terzaghi’s consolidation equation.

  1.  The soil mass is homogeneous.
  2.  The void spaces are completely filled with water.
  3.  The soil solids and water are incompressible.
  4.  Darcy’s law is valid.
  5.  The seepage flow and deformation are in one-dimensional direction.
  6.  Strains are small.
  7.  The permeability is constant over the range of effective stresses.
  8.  There is a unique pressure void ratio relationship (i.e.) the co-efficient of compressibility is constant.
  9.  The time lap in consolidation is entirely due to the low permeability of soil.
