Following are the Factors on which the selection of a site for dams depends:-
- Topography.
- Suitable foundations.
- Good site for reservoirs.
- Availability of construction materials.
- Economy.
- Accessibility.
- Healthy environment/Surroundings.
The selection of Dam site for construction of a dam should consider the following factors:-
- Strong foundation must be available which can provide good stability to dam.
- For cost point of view, the dam is constructed to a point of narrowest point of the river ,if possible.
- For a given height, dam should be capable of storing the maximum volume of water.
- For more efficient use of dam the bed level of dam should be more than that of the normal bed level of the river,as to reduce the height of the dam.
- A suitable site for the spillway should be available in the near the dam.
- Construction materials required for the construction of dam should be easily available near the site.
- The value of land and property submerged by the proposed dam should be as low as possible and also less migration of local peoples .
- The dam site should be easily accessible from all nearby villages,cities and towns so that the required materials can be supplied easily.
- Proper site should be available for the labours and all required facilities shall be available.
